Tom and I headed to Pasadena yesterday to celebrate my mother's 79th birthday.

This is what greeted us upon arrival at my childhood home…not a good omen…

The young plumber (Ryan) assured us it wasn't a big deal though. Whew!

Daddy and I watched him and chatted with him while he worked.

I'm sure he loved it! (Poor kid…)

Turns out I went to high school with Ryan's boss. We called him Doodle. Such a small, funny world!

(That's him in the glasses…Galveston, February '76…ah, those were the days…)

Ryan couldn't fix the problem after all. (But he did promise to tell Doodle hi for me.)

Twenty-four hours later, after multiple calls to the city, my parents were told there's a break in the line and crews will be out tomorrow to work on it.

NOTE: If you have a flushing toilet, go hug it right now. Never, ever, take it for granted, ever, ever, ever again.

For your sakes, I'll say no more about that portion of the weekend…except to say, other than the toilet issue, I think my mother had a wonderful birthday.

My sister brought over enough desserts for an army…fresh apple cake, mystery pie, and brownies.

My brother brought barbecue…brisket, chicken, sausage, plus all the sides.

Tom and I ate.

Oh, and took pictures…

Happy birthday again, Mama! I'm glad I was able to celebrate with you.

And thank you to everyone who wished her a happy day!

Miss you, too! Were you in church when I texted you? Thank you so much for offering to help! I know that set their minds at ease. Just grateful it wasn't necessary and the city stepped up.

Thanks! I'll pass them along. I showed her your Thanksgiving blog (and Cricket's) while I was there and she really enjoyed them.

Mystery Pie is made with egg whites and chocolate chips (probably some other stuff in there, I'm sure 🙂 but it's VERY rich! I'll pass your birthday wishes on to my mom – I think birthday celebrations should go on for days, weeks, months…anyway!

Except for the plumbing issue looks like a great time. I’m always amazed that happy people are always unfazed by adversity.
