"Empty pockets never held anyone back.

Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that."

~Norman Vincent Peale

I spent the first part of the evening paying bills, whittling away at our bank account. Easy come, easy go. I already knew – and the kids knew – this would be a record-breaking teensy Christmas, as far as gifts go.

And on most levels, we're okay with that. We've never gone overboard with the gifts (not that we were ever able to!) and I really hate the commercialization of Christmas and the emphasis on BUY, BUY, BUY!

…but still, seeing it reinforced like that…ouch!

Let Santa know what you want, darlin's

(and remember he's on a budget!)

because Mama and Daddy have empty pockets.

A little down in the dumps, I wrote something on Facebook about how paying bills sure challenges your Christmas spirit.

Like a (gentle) smack on the face, a friend wrote back, "Being able to pay bills is the silver lining that should brighten one's Christmas spirit?????"

What a wake-up call! (Thank you, Ray!) It reminded me, and I'm very grateful, that no matter how broke we've been over the years, how worried I'd be about paying all the bills (not paying them off, mind you…just making the payment), we've always had enough. Sometimes, just enough. Barely. And sometimes there was a little juggling going on. But it worked. There was enough.

Compared to others, we have it made… nothing fancy…maybe not everything we want, but everything we need…and even some of what we want plus room to carve out a little for family and friends

And we have plenty of other blessings that can't be bought at any price.

Whaddaya know. Having empty pockets can be a good thing! There's nothing left but faith and trust and lots of determination and imagination.

And the sky's the limit on those… They're free.

So true – it's all a matter of perspective, and we are truly blessed. I'm especially grateful for friends who know they can (gently) smack me when I need it, so I shift my focus! Love and holiday hugs to you, too, KT!!

Thanks for the reminder. Being able to pay your bills is a blessing. Yup, our presents are a little lean this year too. Which made me blue, but all my bills are paid! But I have my family and everyone is heathly! Merry Christmas!

Thanks for this post today…I needed to hear it! We are on a shoestring budget (which is worth it to be working in places that I actually LOVE going to!!), but was feeling a bit defeated this morning. See, we got a teeny tiny little bonus from my school job (about $100). I was so excited because that was my “stocking stuff” money. Then my sweet kiddo was diagnosed with an ear infection. Plus all of his prescriptions (asthma/allergies/epipen) needed refills. So, $80 trip to CVS ensued and I was bummed.
This post made me realize that even though the stockings might not be as stuffed as they have been in the past, we were able to provide our kiddo with the meds that he needs. And having a healthy, happy kid is the best gift of all, right?
    Thanks again. πŸ™‚

Oh, gosh, Elisabeth, I know exactly how you're feeling. Every time we'd get a little extra, something would happen and we'd need that money rather than use it to climb out of the hole a teensy bit. You can't help but feel a little disappointed, even while you feel blessed because you know it's just proof that Someone's looking after you, providing for your needs.
Hang in there! I'm glad you've found a job you enjoy so much, but I'm so sorry Hudson got that ear infection!! Hope he's already better!

I love this post. I often have the exact same thoughts (albeit I don’t have kids to worry about.) The blessings, once counted, far outnumber the curses, in every situation. I truly believe that.

I just paid my bills online ~ it certainly is a little disheartening to see a healthy number whittled down to lean like that. However, your friend Ray makes a good point ~ and the truth is, some of what I’m paying for now funded something wonderful in the past. So ~ I think what I may have here is a Timing issue.
Elisabeth – I felt your pain on the responsible use of your bonus. It would have been nice to treat yourself to something deserving ~ and thank goodness it was there when you needed it.
    Merry Christmas everyone!

Sally, I like your reminder that I'm paying for something wonderful in the past – just a delayed response. I'll keep that in mind tomorrow when those numbers take another hit! Today's payday πŸ™‚
    Merry Christmas to you!!
