So here I am, walking through the woods in the gray light of morning, ducking under barbed wire, dodging scraggly cedar branches, stepping over fallen logs. My puppies are a dozen feet away, noses to the ground, investigating rocks and brush and just oozing with the joy of life, as usual.

I come to the edge of a dry creek ravine and look for the best way to descend. That's when I noticed this thing at the bottom, nestled in the rocks. It was about the size and shape of a tumbleweed, but it was colored a richer brown and more filled out.

Then it moved. Well, I thought it did. Maybe not. But yes, it did it again, and that's when I saw it's little black face and right away I knew what it was, although I'd never seen one outside of a zoo and never, ever expected to see one around the Hollow.

It was a porcupine, of course. I kind of gave it away in the title, didn't I?

The dogs spotted it right about then.

"Stay!" I told them when they started to charge. And, miraculously, they did! Such good puppies!

It was still fairly dark, and he was at least thirty feet away (I miss my zoom lens!), but I snapped a photo anyway, before Ereth (that's what I named him, from the Avi books) turned and waddled up the other side of the ravine. We waited for him to disappear into the brush before making our way down to the creek bed.

We haven't seen him since, but that's okay. What matters is, I saw him once.

I LOVE your porcupine! Oh, we always wish for the right lens or that we could get closer to get a better image, but as you poignantly point out … You saw a porcupine!! How cool is that and I’m so proud of your pups … Staying on command and not getting stuck with quills. Thanks so much for sharing on Walk and Click Wednesdays. Hope to see you again! ;->

I have never seen one of those in the wild. Do you get many armadillos? I remember those living in San Antonio and now they are up in Missouri where my brother lives part of the year. Good obedient dogs.

Yes, we have armadillos around, although we don't see them very often, either… except dead on the side of the road.  One of the strangest things I've ever seen is an armadillo crossing the concrete pad of a unit at the chemical plant where I worked one night. That was a surprise! It woke me up, that's for sure!

It seems I always have the wrong lens with me! But at least I had my camera – I had left it at home the day before and came across a magnificent butterfly. Thank goodness I had my phone with me. But it wouldn't have been able to capture the porcupine. Tom says the dogs probably ran back down there as soon as they finished breakfast, but I'm trying not to believe that.

I wonder if that is considered a good luck thing? It’s certainly uncommon, so let’s just say it is! 🙂

The tan color surprises me, Barbara — always thought of them as being black and white. Great capture and yes, good puppies! 🙂

How cool. I have only ever seen one, also. It was a few years ago up at the cottage.. during the night. We heard a grinding sound under the cottage and some vocal ruckus. We went outside and turned on the flashlight to see two of them.. probably mother and child.. the former urging the other one to get the heck out of there (where he was seemingly munching on the underside of the cottage). They’re way larger than I thought. 🙂 Anyway.. fine photo for no zoom! 🙂

I always thought of them as black and white, too! But just seeing it surprised me!! After all these years of walking in that area…

I'm just grateful I remembered to grab my camera!! I was surprised it came out as well as it did – I had to crop it down quite a bit. It was pretty big – my dogs are chickens at heart (don't tell them I said that) and that's most likely why they were inclined to behave that morning.

I'm just so glad I grabbed my camera that morning!! There hasn't been much to photograph lately, and I've been tempted to leave it behind because it's heavy!!

Reminds me of the beaver I saw last month being chased by a dog in a river. The dog was not successful.
One could do worse than be a beaver, I think, or a porcupine.

Fun to come across Ereth, even if you didn’t have your zoom lens to get a close-up capture of him – or is it a her? Sometimes we just need to enjoy what is instead of thinking of having to have a photo of it (I say this to myself, always the photographer…). Porcupines are special creatures, of a different world.

Otto, you're so right about just enjoying life and not feeling like we have to photograph it. But, I'm sure you know as a photographer, it's awesome when we do capture it in our camera! There are so many things I would never remember if I didn't have photographs to trigger the memory!

Wow, that’s so cool! I have never seen one anywhere so this is indeed a special sighting. Too bad about your zoom. It never fails when I take my camera on an outing without the big lens, I will inevitably see something that requires it. But I know yours is being repaired. Hope you get it back soon and that Ereth will emerge for you once again!

We've been walking in that area for 10 years and this is the first time we've seen Ereth. I hope he wasn't just passing through, but if he was, I'm doubly grateful our paths crossed!!
