We are living in a tinderbox, surrounded by parched junipers and oaks. A few of my purple flowers are still blooming, somehow (they are so tough!), but no pink is left on the mountain pinks, only their straw skeletons as reminders of their faded beauty. Everything else is drying up, turning to dust, settling on our caliche road and then accumuluting on the back of my van…Dsc_0004

Obviously, we need rain. There are good things about this dry weather – well, I can only think of one…no mosquitoes. Okay, here’s another…I haven’t had to get the weed-eater out for my little patch of yard in front of the house yet.

But our big pond is dry and our little pond is getting lower and lower. The animals are thirsty. The trees are thirsty. My van needs to be washed.

So the rain we’re expecting this evening after Hurricane Dolly hits the lower Texas coast and moves inland is a blessing…for us. I just hate that the people on the coast have to go through a hurricane for us to be blessed.  I’ll be praying for them today.

Barbara, I just read all of your Country Life entries, and they are excellent. Warm, knowing, and they remind me to appreciate the things I hurry past when you stop to tell about them. Please write more!

I’m guilty of hurrying past too often – we are so lucky to be living here – writing about it makes me stop and appreciate what we have. By the way, how’s Frankie? I haven’t seen him in a few days!
