"Our backs ache, our skirts are too tight, we shake our booties from left to right!"

A mom in Detroit was shocked to hear this coming out of her 6-year-old daughter's mouth – it was a cheer she'd been taught to chant on her cheerleading squad.

OMG!

The mom did just what I would have done if TG had been expected to chant this when she was a middle school cheerleader: she went to the coach… the general manager… other parents.

Other parents were upset, but I guess none of them had the guts to speak up like this mom did. Because of her complaints, the daughter was kicked off the squad.

Is it just me and this mom that think something is very, very wrong with a 6-year-old chanting something so suggestive? Call me a prude, but I don't even think this is appropriate for high school cheerleaders. What the heck does it have to do with football, anyway? What happened to cheers like "Push 'em back, push 'em back, wayyyyy back!"?

What happened to childhood? What happened to innocence?

I can’t believe what they had those children saying. I agree with you what in the world does that have to do with football.
What is wrong with our children today is parents not standing up and saying this is wrong. I am behind this woman a 100% and shame on the other women who were involved with making the decisions for the cheer material and kicking that baby off the team!

I know – that poor little girl doesn't understand what's going on except that she's not on the cheer squad anymore!

It makes me think of that commercial where the Dad is doing the cheer with her young daughter and shaking their booties ~ have you ever seen it?

No, I don’t agree with booty shaking either. BUT what I do agree with (and can’t figure out how to comment on- thus the comment here) is your article on BlogHer about the mom in Aisle 7. I stumbled across it a couple days ago and haven’t stopped thinking about it- I hunted it back down because I just had to write and tell you how much it impacted me! I’m a mom with young kids and I often find myself in Aisle 7 worn out and exhausted. What you said gave me a fresh perspective! I even shared it with my young mom friends on facebook- something I don’t think I’ve ever done. It’s always nice to be encouraged, so from the bottom of my heart- thank you!

Chelsea, thank YOU so much for taking the time to tell me (and to share it!) I'm so glad you took it as I meant it – not an attack or criticism on this mom, but more a sympathetic memory of how those days felt and how tough it can be to see beyond them.
Thank you again so much for your comment!

Before I got to where you said it, I was thinking, “I don’t even think it’s appropriate for high schoolers!”
If more moms would take a stand about this and the sexy clothes available for little little girls, maybe we could reverse this trend. If moms don’t do it, who will?

I agree – moms and/or dads, but definitely has to start with the parents, if no one else is going to have any sense about it!
