When Kate at Recommended Daily Dose invited me to participate in this year's Happy Holiday Blogtastic Shout-Out, I immediately thought of Jill and her blog, Jillsy Girl.

I really can't remember how it started … did I leave the first comment or did she? However it happened, I know I'm the one who has benefited most from the friendship.

And yes, I said friendship. Despite what my daughter and others say, that you can't really be friends with someone you've never met face-to-face, I consider Jill my friend – and I don't toss that word around lightly.

Friend (noun): someone you know, trust, and like; an ally in a fight, cause, or struggle; a patron or supporter.

Jill made it a point to comment on my blog almost every day – it bothered her that I didn't get many, if any, comments, and she was determined I'd get at least one. (It bothered me, too, and made me doubt myself and question why, oh why, I spent so many hours composing a post that would just drift into a void, seemingly unread, because without comments or feedback, that's how it feels. The answer, of course, is that I did it for myself – but it still bothered me.)

She would also email me ideas on how to make it easier to comment (she was brainstorming for me!) and give me shout-outs on her blog … all in the hopes of increasing the number of comments I elicited.

Just knowing she thought my posts should garner more readers and comments made me feel more confident and less alone in the huge Blog World, which you might not realize can be a lonely place at times, full of cliques, until you find a comfortable niche of your own. (Kind of like junior high.) Despite two years of blogging under my belt and quite a few blog friends, I still felt on the outside looking in until Jill reached out to me.

She had plenty of readers, her own circle of well-deserved fans, drawn to her beautiful photography, poetic words, and loyalty. She didn't need me, yet still she reached out to me and pulled me up, and not just with my blog, but also with my photography: through her invitation to a FlickR group, I found a new network of support and encouragement that helped ignite my latest obsession…

…which led to Confessions of a Photography Addict. Go ahead – click over there for a second. See the photograph at the top? It's mine, but Jill took it and created that beautiful banner.

I didn't ask her to – she just did it.

That's a friend.

And a few days ago, she sent me an email with marketing ideas for my Silpada jewelry business. Can you believe it?

The thing is, I suspect I'm not the only one she supports like this. She is an amazing woman. I don't have to meet her face to face to know that.

But I hope to someday, anyway.

Thank you, Jill! I doubt you know just how much your friendship has meant to me the past few months.

Now do yourself a favor and click HERE to check out her blog, and while you're there, be sure to click on the link to JG Studio Cards. I can vouch for the beauty of Jill's cards, all created from some of her own amazing photographs.

And be sure to visit A Recommended Daily Dose (another wonderful blog) to find links to the other shout-outs! Thanks so much for hosting this and inviting me, Kate! I'm glad we've connected here in the Blog World, too!

I’ve got tears in my eyes. I think you know my spirit has been waning lately and I feel awful for not visiting much in the last few weeks, so this post is such a wonderful and most appreciated (as well as needed) gift. Yes, a gift that I will cherish and keep close to my heart. I’ve got to tell you this, I just woke up and only have a few minutes of computer time this morning because we’re leaving for Florida to visit my Mom for the week. Anyway, for the few minutes I’ve been up you’ve been on my mind, so it was ironic that I had this email from FB linking me to this post. You’re on my mind because I had a dream about you last night(first time ever) where we were roommates. It was a very vivid dream and I could go into details, but I don’t have time, maybe while we’re driving today I’ll give you a call! Thank you so much for this post, but I want to also say that it’s been a blessing getting to know you as well! Hugs, Jillsy

What a wonderful post…as I was reading, I had a smile in my face! Why? Because your feelings toward Jillsy’s friendship are exactly how I feel about you! Isn’t it something how we connect through blogging, AND how special a person, we don’t know personally, becomes to us?
We can…we REALLY CAN have a true friend. I know I have one in you…and I thank you for supporting me…and my blog as Jillsy has supported you! I was so surprised when you made that comment on my post “On turning 50”, and even more surprised when you kept coming back! Look at us now and it’s only been 6 months since then!
What a wonderful way of showing your TRUE friendship to Jillsy. Her work is most deserving of your praise! You have blessed her and EVERYONE who has read this post!!
Sending a big hug your way!

So beautifully written. I agree, I’ve found so many wonderful souls in this blog world. People find it hard to believe that we can form bonds. I read every one of your posts, but find I’m scrambling to keep up with everything, so I don’t comment as often as I would like. A wonderful New Years resolution I think! xoxo

I'm so relieved you liked it – I wasn't sure it expressed enough just how much your friendship has meant to me. How strange that you had that dream about us, but very cool at the same time! Yes, give me a call – I want to know the details!!
I don't always have time to visit my favorite blogs, either, so you know I understand when you don't drop by. I don't know how you do all you do! Have a safe trip and a wonderful visit with your mom! Hugs!

Thank you, Amy, and I know just what you mean! Days will go by before I realize it, and then I scramble to catch up with my favorite bloggers! I'm way behind right now, I know.  I'm trying to figure out a system so I don't miss a single one. If I do, I'll let you know (and you do the same for me!) Merry Christmas!!

How appropriate…I noticed that this posting has received way more comments than most of yours do (though I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t read you every day). I’m glad you’ve made so many good friends through blogging, and I’m glad for their encouragement to keep you going, since I LOVE reading your stuff!

Interesting comparison Junior High School to Blogging. I never thought of it that way. Blogging certainly has it ups and downs and friendships are part of it all. One thing about blogging that I don’t think was an issue in Junior High is time. Blogging and following up with fellow bloggers takes time that we often don’t have.
I probably discovered your blog from Jillsy – she is a great connector.
    Merry Christmas

I might be wrong, but I think it's easier for those of you on Blogger to connect to other bloggers – one advantage it has over Typepad that I've noticed. But you are very right about the time issue – I'm always behind on reading, but if I read, I almost always leave a comment (I can't help myself!! lol) I know I found yours through Jill – and I'm glad! Merry Christmas!

Barbara, I can totally relate to all you say about Jill. We’ve become friends as well, sharing stories and thoughts via email for, gee, over a year? I’ll have my second anniversary of Delicacies in Feb.
I think there are many like Jill out there, those of us with kindred spirits, who blog to share and connect. And, finding that rare friend is such a treat. I found you through Jill. We are all amazingly interconnected, aren’t we?

We are, and that's something I never really expected when I started blogging. I think I first found you through Jane on Midlife Bloggers, and so when we crossed paths on Jill's site, it was like bumping into a friend in an unexpected place. I love how interconnected we all are.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

Well Barbara — you couldn’t have said it better about the wonderful Jillsy. I love that Blogging does allow us to discover new people. I admit I lost my desire to blog — not sure if I will find it again but I will never ever stop following Jill — here there or anywhere. So nice to meet you.

I've enjoyed hearing from all the others who feel the same way about Jill – I'm not surprised there are so many! I understand that burned out on blogging feeling, but I just glanced at yours and I hope you bounce back. I love the that list of advice you gave (I might have to borrow it – with a link back of course!) and I'm so sorry about your aunt. Hope 2011 is wonderful to you! Happy New Year and thanks for stopping by!
