Dear Miss Belle,

It's hard for me to imagine now, watching you run down the road in front of me in that funny way you have, where your rear-end flies up higher than your head, that I ever debated the puppy question at all.

When I see Max's face light up at the sight of you, his beloved puppy … when I see him ignore his pain to play with you, I feel ashamed and selfish that I had doubts about bringing you to our home.

I forgive you the blankets you've shred to pieces … the old shoes, towels, gloves, everything you've scavenged from the neighborhood and left on our front porch … even the deer leg and dead field mouse … because of the joy I see in Max, and the love you give to me.

I won't mention Frankie – I'm not sure what happened there, so it's better to just let the past go. I'm certain of one thing… if you had anything to do with Frankie's demise, it was purely innocent. I know this because I see nothing but innocence in your face … innocence, love and joy.

You are a lover, living to love, to give, to experience life. Your exuberance is contagious.

You make me laugh.

What better feeling is there than being greeted by a dog who wiggles from head to toe like a Slinky toy, nose wrinkling in a grin, unable to contain the joy she feels at the sight of you?

How can I scold you when you jump up to lavish my ear in wet affection, or accidentally pinch my arm with your teeth when you give me your tiny 'sweet kisses'?

You've added sparkle and energy to our lives. And joy. Lots of joy.

We should have named you Joy.

Happy first birthday, Miss Belly Wiggles Joy Shallue, and thank you.

Love,

mom

What a sweet face. Our boxer came home as a surprise, chewed up a chair and put some holes in the walls, now I wouldn’t know what to do without him.

You must have gotten her when she was a few months old, no? I can’t believe you’ve had her so long! How time flies! Wonderful post, and yes, those furry things bring such joy, love and laughter into our lives!

Awwww….so sweet. That is how my family is, we have a dog and six cats, and there are always antics and laughter and a little bit of scolding going on somewhere! But we adore them all, just tonight my husband and I were both sitting in chairs in the living room because the dog had taken over he couch…

I envy you your cats! When my 20-year-old Siamese died years ago, I had to make a decision between my kids' allergy doctor and getting another cat. (It was tough!)

There is a very good possibility that is one of the cutest dogs in the world. Makes me want another one…what kind is she? Great photos too! And the quote at the end made me almost cry. That’s perfection!

I don’t think I could deal with a deer’s leg though. My lab ripped up the carpet in our bedroom, scratched the door, and ate countless books.

    Barbara,
First time commenting for me. I’ve been enjoying your blog since I learned about it from Recommended Daily Dose’s Shout Out last month.
We’re about to get a dog for our eight-year-old. I showed him the pictures of Belle, and he wants one just like her now.
Do you know this story told by Al Pacino?
“I was on the stage for three hours straight, never coming off, and you know how it is when you’re doing a show… you connect to the audience and I felt this presence in the audience, these eyes staring at me. I had never done this before. I played the whole performance to these eyes because they were so… they were inspiring me. They were so riveting. They were just staring at me and I thought I’m finally being looked at. It was throwing me a little bit, but it was inspiring me. At curtain call, when the play was over, I came out. I had to look in the direction of those eyes. And I came out, taking my curtain call, and I looked right where those eyes were. They were two seeing-eye dogs.”

I've never heard that story! Thanks for sharing it. I believe it, too – often I'll glance at the door or window and she'll just be sitting there, watching me! I always go out to say hi when I see her. Good luck finding a puppy for your 8-year-old. Since both of ours are rescue dogs, that's what I recommend!

Thanks, Kate – I think she's pretty dang cute myself, but I know I'm partial. She's a Rottweiler mix (not sure about the mix party, but we're suspecting Jack Russell the way she can run and jump! And I also suspect Lab the way she loves to chew!)

Yes, they do! Belle was about 13 weeks old by the time we got her. Not a teeny puppy, which was probably a good thing. I would have been a nervous wreck about her!
