"Osama has been killed!"

I didn't believe the words at first when I saw them posted on Facebook, just skimmed past them thinking it was some political joke or teaser.

Then I saw them again. And again. Behind me, my phone beeped – my son texting me with the news.

I turned on the television, saw the crowds cheering in the streets, and wondered why I didn't feel the same elation…

It's so surreal after all these years.

What is it I feel?

A sigh of relief for sure – he's just one of many terrorists, but he wielded the most power, did the most damage in recent history. I feel grateful to those who risked their lives to find him and happiness that Osama has been brought to justice for the sake of those whose lives he ripped apart.

I think what I'm feeling can be summed up as cautious optimism. It seems lately the militant leaders are losing their popularity in the middle east – maybe that's why we were finally able to find Osama. Maybe his death will give power and energy to the wave of democracy, to the people who are tired of the violence in their countries. I hope and pray instead of triggering terrorist acts against us, it serves as a warning and deterrent to any out there thinking of taking Osama's place in the terrorist world.

Because, again, we know he's just one of many. And there are still American soldiers dying in Afghanistan and other places around the world.

But today, I give thanks for a bit of justice in this crazy world and pray it soothes the hearts of Osama's many victims. I'm grateful for the determination and courage of our special forces, for this seed of optimism, cautious or not, they have planted in my heart.

I hope one day it can grow into full-bloomed elation that the wars are over and terrorists no longer wield power anywhere in the world.

Well said! Funny, my son texted me, too. Hubby told me as I was going upstairs to ready myself for bed. I stood on the stairs for several minutes trying to let it sink in. Now that I’ve had about 12 hours to process it, I’m hoping and praying that this doesn’t result in more terrorist activities. The defeatist in my personality also reminds me that every generation has one or more of these monsters, and Osama will not be the last. But we keep fighting for good. We have to. I’m so incredibly proud of our military. And grateful.
Still loving that flower. So beautiful!

How glad I am that we both happen to be ‘on here’ at the same time at last!
I don’t quite know how I feel about this either. And it seems that there are a lot of people who are seeking an emotion other than Elation – because that just feels wrong.
To your point, he’s one of many. For those who needed this closure, I’m grateful peace may now be felt within them.
Though ‘peace’ seems such an odd word – when a targeted act of violence was countered with another targeted act of violence.
I’m not even comfortable writing that – because how can I possibly begin to understand what those who have suffered so terribly these past 10 years have been through?
Like you, I pray this soothes the hearts of Osama’s many victims. And Gail is right – that flower IS incredibly beautiful.

Thanks, Sally. It's good to hear that someone else is experiencing the same feelings about it.

I think you're right – I don't like it, but unfortunately there are times when the use of violence is the only effective tactic, and we have to be grateful for our military who are willing to take on that burden!

I was a bit concerned when the announcement came on my TV that the President was going to speack at such a late hour last night. Such drama!

I don’t see it as celebrating his death, but celebrating the fact that he can no longer do any harm and that justice has finally been served!

This is a beautiful photograph Barbara!
    Such wonderful simplicity and composition.
I think I may feel better about the events of the past couple of days, if I could stop asking myself the question, “How many people will pay for this?”
I wish I felt better about it.

I hope this gives closure to his many victims – not only in the US, but in Britain, India and Pakistan too (to name just a few other countries).
I hope now we can get down to the difficult business of focusing on peace.
    Stunning flower!

Very well said Barbara! Also, Jillsy girl hit the nail on the head! I too, just love that flower photo! I think I took one of the same type of flower on our California vacation. I think it’s in my album on FB, I’ll go take a look. But, your photo is much better. ;o)
