For the past decade of my life, whenever the trail I was following narrowed to a dead-end, a new path would suddenly appear. Now I've begun watching for those trailheads. At times it feels like I'm wandering through a maze – if I think about it, it seems a little scary, but I just need to adjust my vision a bit and it becomes a big adventure.

It is rarely – dare I say never? – the path I would have chosen for myself, if I had my druthers. These aren't trails I've pursued in any form or fashion, but along each one I learn something new, either a skill or some aspect of myself, that helps me when that path hits a wall and the new one appears.

If I had my druthers (I know you're wondering) I would spend my days with my camera and a laptop, alternating between traipsing around Texas (or the world!) shooting photos, and sitting in my rocker on the back porch, capturing the words in my head and sorting them into stories.

But because I haven't figured out how to pay the bills by doing either of those, I'm forced to spend most of my time doing something else for a paycheck. Without a degree or any set area of expertise honed by years of practice, that's getting tougher, but add to it my age and my impatience with jobs that don't challenge me or that bore me… um, what was I saying?

Anyway… my old job is dwindling down (the company is moving) but a new one popped up and today was my first day. I'm not sure if it's okay with them to be specific on my blog about it, so I won't say much, except this…

1. I'm exhausted

2. I enjoyed it

3. my feet hurt

4. it's not something I ever wanted to do and probably wouldn't do anywhere but this specific location, but, be that as it may, I think I'm going to like it and might even be able to handle it.

5. I hope they feel the same about me!

It's a weekend job, totally away from a computer (probably a good break for me!) so if I don't answer your emails or visit your blogs from Friday through Sunday, it's nothing personal! I'm just pooped!

And now for my favorite photo of the week. I had planned to post something different from later in the week, but my computer is being ornery and won't let me upload the latest photos from my camera, so you could say these are my default favorites.

First, the purple prairie verbena, still stubbornly blooming. I love these flowers, for their color and their grit.

Next, Max wading in his own pond. The water is already almost gone again, but at least he had his own backyard pool for a few days.

Hope you have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend!

Don’t you have an IOU coupon for a foot massage from your hubby stashed away somewhere? If not, create one really quick and go cash it in!
I’m really glad you like it!! Good luck tomorrow!

I’ve had similar experiences in my life and I’m now waiting impatiently for the next path to appear. And, after reading this maybe I should sit with it a little, contemplate and see what comes up.
I’m not doing what I want with my life-when it comes to money and work and it is challenging…so I’m glad you like this new job; I hope everything falls into place for you.

You know, Barbara, I believe that everyone and everything needs a break periodically …bloggers in particular. I wish you the best on your new career!

Thank you for identifying that purple weed! I see these all the time and wonder what they’re called. Beautiful photos, both.
Glad you found a job so quickly! Finding a job these days is a real challenge. I’ve been in my present job 23 years and don’t know what I’d do if I had to start looking. But it could become a reality soon if things don’t start looking up.
I have been having to take longer than usual blog breaks due to personal issues so I completely understand.
Happy 4th to you and your family!

path? who needs a damn path?
Oh wow maybe I should open up a little about my crappy attitude towards corporate work. There’s a few reasons I don’t want to. One is just because it will sound like a crazy rant. Another is embarrassing my family even though few read the blog.
Yeah going around the world taking pictures would be fun – for awhile – too much road time would not sit real well with me.
    Happy 4th pathfinder

The three points you described sound very familiar to me, especially the hurting feet. Are you in retail? Well, regardless of where you are working, I wish you the best of luck, and I am sure you will do great!!
    Happy 4th to you too!!

I think I probably agree with your attitude about corporate work!  And I'd probably agree with you on the 'too much road time' – but since it will most likely never happen, I can dream it would be lovely! lol Hope you had a good 4th, Lisleman!

Good luck to you! I hope you've had time to sit and think about it. It's funny – I've always dreamed of doing what you're doing!! I don't think this is a job could keep forever, but I'm really grateful for the experience.

His feet were killing him, too! We thought about trading off foot rubs or sitting side by side with them in the jacuzzi tub, but ended up just watching a movie. lol

The light on the water in the pond where Max is — so beautiful. Rest your weary feet in there!

I'm glad I snapped that one when I did – the water is all dried up again! Just a little bit left in our lower pond, but it's pretty murky. (yuck!)

I’m glad you’re enjoying your new part-time job even if it is hard on your feet. (At least you’re getting that needed exercise!)
