Face in the mirror

You are the face I recognize, the face I know, the face I greet each morning,

Yes, the face I love, despite the lines and scars and spots.

You and I have traveled together, collected mementoes of Life.

Your eye-crinkles and mouth-creases… reminders of laughter and reasons to smile.

Deep lines between your brows… etched during late nights worrying about the kids.

Tiny scars on your forehead… souvenirs of chicken pox at 10 and 30, and shingles at 50.

Dark spots… kisses of Galveston sunshine.

Remember?

I do.

My life.

My face.

  DSC_0040sign (Medium)

This morning, the face staring back at me in the mirror sported a few pimples amidst her wrinkles, scars and spots. That's not really fair, is it?

My grandmother swore by Oil of Olay. She had beautiful skin. I don't remember her ever having any pimples, but the one time I tried the lotion, my face broke out something awful. Now I'm afraid of anything labeled "Oil of Olay"!

My mother has beautiful skin, too. She used the Clinique ritual for awhile – I tried it, but I think it was just too much work for me. It probably broke me out, too.

I remember lots of pimples back then, when I was a teenager. I tried everything. No luck.

Until finally, I asked our family doctor what to do. "Stop putting all that crap on your face," he told me. "Just use Ivory soap and be done with it."

He was right. Ivory soap worked! Until a few years ago when I noticed my cheeks felt like sandpaper.

Dang menopause.

Obviously, I needed a moisturizer, but I was scared, remembering the Oil of Olay situation as well as one experiment with an eye cream, guaranteed to "minimize the appearance of fine lines" – it actually poofed up the skin around my eyes. I looked like I'd been stung by a bee! That's how it got rid of the lines!

I'd rather have the lines.

The key words to watch for (I realized afterwards) were  "the appearance of"… Very important!

Even with this in mind, I eventually succumbed to advertisements for L'Oreal's Revitalift products. I'm happy to report that my face didn't break out and my eyes didn't poof up like marshmallows. In fact, nothing much happened except my cheeks no longer felt like sandpaper.

In other words, I still have my wrinkles, but that's okay. I'll do what I can to keep from accumulating more, but I earned the ones I have. They're me.

I don't think I'll ever be bothered enough by my wrinkles to try Botox or surgery (I don't like pain)… but I have friends who've delved into those treatments, so I'm not passing judgement.

So imagine my surprise one day last week when I looked in the mirror and noticed the lines between my brows were missing. Where did my furrows go?

The only thing I could attribute it to was three nights in a row of solid 7+ hours of sleep. Who could have guessed? Sleep – truly the best anti-aging tool we have, and it's free! But how many of us take advantage of it? I know I don't!

For instance, here I am typing at the computer way past my bedtime.

Furrows and dark circles are guaranteed for tomorrow! (I just hope the pimples are gone.)

But what about you? If you have a face you've grown old with, do you love it? Hate it? What do you do to take care of it?

Your skin.. your face is beautiful. I’m still trying to come to terms with all my wrinkles. It’s taken me 3 years to update my profile pic. 😉

I can’t see any wrinkles on you at all! I never put soap on my face as it dries it out – and always moisturize – usually with something from the Body Shop or something natural.
Our wrinkles are us – no matter how much we don’t like them!

Your skin has always looks good to me Barb! Glad the Revitalift is doing what it’s supposed to do. I had adult acne through my thirties and learned that having dry skin and oil together will harbor bacteria, so I make sure I wash my face every morning and night before bed, gently exfoliate all dry skin, then follow up with oil free moisturizer and/or foundation. Been working pretty good so far, knock wood. As for the wrinkles, yep I have them and do accept them, however, I do like the “lift” I get from the Botox, just wish it wasn’t so darn expensive! Mom used to say, “Kim, some of us get fat, and some of us get wrinkled, but we’re all gonna show our age in some capacity”. Here’s to growing gracefully!

Gosh but you’re lovely to look at. For me, olive oil soap does the clean and moisturize steps in one swish. At 65 the wrinkles are showing up everywhere. I consider them badges of courage 🙂

Barbara, you are so lovely! You still have that All American Girl look and a twinkle in your eye. 🙂
I am just this year (age 50) noticing the creasing and extreme dryness around the eyes. So when I got a sample of Murad Environmental Shield Essential-C Eye Cream from Sephora I tore it open hoping for a miracle. While not miraculous, it does instantly soothe my tired eyes and provide moisture–something all of the other creams I’d tried failed to accomplish. Yeah, at $51 it’s rather pricey, but it’s my one splurge for my face!

Your face is lovely. Now that I’m pretty much on the other ‘side” … intereting how the freckles are a bit larger, the skin a bit drier and deeper wrinkles. But, it’s the only one I have to enjoy this ride with .. so I think it’s doing just fine.

I have been using one of Neutragena’s face lotions for several years every morning except for a couple of years when I switched to Arbonne products (much more expensive). Honestly, the Neutragena has done the same as Arbonne but for a fraction of the cost. I don’t think I have that many more wrinkles now than I did several years ago. Where I do notice the biggest difference is in my neck. Ugh! I have to find out if there’s any exercise for that!
You are looking fantastic, so high-5 to you!

You’ve given me an idea for a possible future post of my own, and I thank you for that. I’ll give a link back to this if and when I do it, of course. If I do it, I certainly don’t expect to receive all of the nice compliments you’ve received in response (which are all deserved, by the way.)

High-5 back at you, for the same reason!! I've been tempted to try one of Neutragena's anti-wrinkle products – also one by Roc, but I hate to spend money on something and then not be able to use it! lol For your neck, pretend you're biting an apple. I saw it on "I Love Lucy" years ago! Not sure if it helps, but it makes me remember Lucy when I do it. 🙂

The older I get, the less guilty I feel about splurging on my face and hair! I'll keep that cream in mind – right now the Revitalift is keeping the dryness away pretty good, if not the wrinkles 🙂

Amen! I'll accept it gracefully (but that doesn't mean I have to give in easily, right? lol) I suspect the pimples had something to do with the bucket of popcorn I ate at the movies Friday, followed by splitting fish and chips with Daniel at Baker Street Pub. 🙂

I think I'm one of the few people who has to use soap – but it has to be something very natural. I've switched to Dove  – Ivory became too drying even for me! And I moisturize, moisturize, moisturize now! Amen on our wrinkles – we earned them, whether we liked it or not!

    He’s like that.
Anyway, I wanted to add that my Uncle also swore by Oil of Ole’, but I think that was just his pet name for tequila.
    Have a nice day.

I have been blessed with my mother’s complexion and young-looking skin. Still, I haven’t treated mine as well as she did (9 kids kept her too busy to lay out in the sun!) You’re going to laugh at this, but I recently (accidentally) realized that using that green sunburn gel on my face before going to bed does wonders for my skin! (Seriously.) Other than that now and then, I just use Mary Kay moisturizer.
For what it’s worth, I audio recorded my thoughts on this subject. You can find it here: http://www.box.net/shared/fhofzvuv3s

I never thought about using the sunburn gel on my face, but I guess that makes sense – it has aloe in it and is supposed to repair the damage. I might have to try it!!
I used Mary Kay at one time (I forgot about that!) but I wasn't good about remembering to order it. lol

i’m here via suldog. what a wonderful ode to the face in the mirror! you’re lovely. and i love that you embrace who you are. i may steal this idea like suldog has and make it my own.
as for my own care….wash with burt’s bees, go over with witch hazel (i have oily skin), use a light moisturizer that’s all natural. i found anything synthetic tends to make me breakout.

Same here – if I just looked at it sideways, my face would break out! Despite the dry tendencies, it's still doing it, too, every once in a while. (Not fair!)
I love Suldog's parody – please feel free to take the idea and run with it! Let me know when you do so I can see it. Thanks for hopping over!

If I had a face like yours, I’d be immensely happy with it.
No, I’m not especially happy with the face in the mirror…but I never have been. I used to like my skin…I have that Irish red head/fair skin thing going on…but my eyes have always been lost, lashes practically non-existent, chins too many.
A few years back, I had a couple of things going on at the same time…menopause and cancer. Menopause was a breeze, compared to some of the horror stories I’ve heard, but combined with cancer, I aged 10 years over the course of a couple of weeks. Wrinkles upon wrinkles, blemishes, pearl spots, my “beauty mark” just disappeared. I look like I have a perpetual frown.
Tried some of the products you mentioned…NOTHING.
Ah, who cares? At least, I HAVE a face, and it’s whole, and it houses a brain which is not totally non-functional. And while my eyes are not pretty, I can see the stars at night and gaze into the faces of those I love.
Yeah, now that I think about it, it’s not a bad face at all.

I have one of those perpetual frowns myself. I'm always having people ask what's wrong and tell me to 'smile!' I can't imagine going through menopause and cancer all at the same time – I'm so glad you survived both so we can enjoy your writing! My daughter has that fair Irish skin – she hates it, of course, because we usually don't like what we're given, right? But I think it's beautiful!

If you had a positive experience with Arbonne, they have a great neck cream that I use that is wonderful! Very firming! Works for the wrinkle on the chest too!
