I played my drums today.

That makes two days in a row after several weeks of merely dusting them. A friend shared with me some basic beats he learned in his drum class and I've been wanting to practice them for days, but just had too many important things I needed to do.

Playing the drums isn't important. Or at least I didn't think it was until today. Not until the rain that wasn't supposed to arrive until tomorrow showed up a day early, forcing me to postpone a family photo shoot I had scheduled with a friend this afternoon.

We've had a tough time meshing our calendars. I had already postponed the shoot once to go to a meeting I had forgotten about.  Now it will be another two weeks before we can meet up.

Disappointed and discouraged, I picked up the sticks and banged away for a little while, not in the mood to do anything else.

It didn't make me any money. I couldn't cross it off of my long to-do list. But I felt better. A few rays of mental sunshine broke through the rainclouds that had somehow rolled into my head.

It made me think of BlogHer's Life Well Lived question for this week:  How do you put yourself first? How does taking time for yourself help make you happier?

Almost every morning I take my puppies for a walk. That makes me happy, but as much as I love my walks, the joy in their faces is contagious and makes my heart soar.

In fact, most of my happiness is triggered by doing things for others. I truly believe that's the secret to happiness.

But there's a need for balance. Even Jesus took breaks from the crowds, heading off into the mountains or across the sea to be by himself. If he needed breaks, how much more so do we, to keep ourselves from becoming burned out or resentful?

Playing the drums makes me happy. Slipping off for a lunch… or a weekend… with my friends (or my husband) makes me happy. Having my hair cut by someone who knows how to cut my hair makes me happy.

That first cup of coffee in a quiet house… stepping away from the computer into the early afternoon sunshine… taking photographs of flowers and full moons… writing… reading… these all make me happy.

And that happiness is like a big deep breath, a surge of energy coursing through my body, revitalizing me, giving me what I need to help others.

What about you? How do you put yourself first? (Do you?)

And how does taking time for yourself help make you happier?

how wonderful. It’s great to be able to find ‘me’ time, isn’t it? Keep drumming, you work very hard and you deserve this.
I am very bad at honoring myself. I so often forget that by nourishing myself I am more energized and able to help others.
What I’ve just done is to get out of 2 obligations that weren’t really serving me. I was continuing out of a sense of ‘ought to’ and really it was no longer enjoyable. So, I sent a nice resignation note this afternoon! I feel great about it.

Good for you!! It is hard when you work at home for yourself to make sure you schedule "down" time. There's always something that needs to be done – or could be done! I'm trying to make sure the projects I take on are things I enjoy, too.

I wish I had learned it sooner than I did. Too many years wasted.

I’m fortunate to be able to get time for myself. Very simple activities but as you know (your list of sweets demonstrates it) simple things can bring happiness.

Helping others really does help our own well-being! It is important – as you say – to make time for ourselves. I think we women are particularly bad at this…

I think we are, too. It's one area where we might need to learn from men! 🙂

Besides helping people, I think noticing and enjoying those simple things is a key to happiness as well!

Playing any instrument, by yourself, is a form of meditation. I often find my thoughts clearer, and some clouds lifted, after banging away at my bass for an hour.

Don’t know if you are on G+ often but I found a drum set picture I think you’ll like up there. I referenced you in the resharing of it so you should have it in your notices.

I think it’s wonderful that you found the old, dusty drum set, because, yes, we do need to make time for ourselves. I for instance love going up in the mountains. But just my daily run gives me a lot of energy, too. And it’s small things, like you say, coffee, a little break of sunshine in another ways rainy day, some beautiful music, a good book. There are so many small things that gives me inspiration and energy. Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts.

How cool that you play the drums Barbara! It indeed looks like we are on the same thought waves here. Sometimes it is the smallest things that can make us the happiest. I put myself first after I have had a stressful day/week. That way, I know I can be the best ‘me’ I can be for being with my family. 🙂

I recently donated our drumkit to the charity shop that supports folk like Sam and his friends, but we’ve had good use out of it – or at least, two of my four have – but it’s been long neglected, in favour of the call of the other new adventures that pull them along. I hope you do manage to pursue this, I love that image of you seated there (smile).
For years I barely had time to even visit the toilet, well, not alone. Now, since the children have grown older, I’m constantly amazed at the luxuries I can afford myself (oh no, not of the monetary kind, those demands are ever present for every parent, I imagine). Time, isn’t it blissful when you rediscover it?
I indulge myself walking Jake on the beach, or in the glen, or by completely losing myself in a juicy novel for an entire afternoon, and of course, with my writing and blogging, as well as the occassional pleasure of lunching out with a friend. Hubby and I always eat out for lunch on the week he is here, when the children are happily out and about doing their doings (we have no sitter for Sam, so our evenings are usually taken). Cooking is also a passion of mine, I love the chopping, mixing and stirring, and delight in clothing the house with rich, warm aromas. I also love the ritual of plucking the harvest straight from the garden, delivered fresh to the pot. That season is will soon arrive, and I shall pickle, freeze and preserve what I can. It truly is the simple little things such as these, that puts the spark into life, isn’t it?

It truly is! Just small moments in a day, nothing fancy. And the best things don't cost anything, or at least not much. I love the image of you pulling things from the garden, chopping them up and throwing them in a pot!
