I sit on the back deck, glass of red wine in my hand, rocking back and forth, back and forth. Tom has to work late, so I'm covering the evening meal for him.

Max is stretched out in front of his food bowl. Belle is just a few feet away near hers. The sun has dropped below the trees, leaving a smudge of pink on their tips. From there the sky deepens to a rich blue with only tiny wisps of cloud marring the perfection.

The air pulses with the beat of the cicadas, a back and forth, up and down, see-sawing song that drowns out everything else.

But Max somehow hears something else through the din and he's up on his feet in one fluid movement, despite his dysplasiatic knees and hips, bounding to the end of the deck in Tigger fashion, barking, barking, barking, assisted by his sidekick Belle, who isn't quite sure what they're barking at, but she's got his back, nonetheless.

I praise his ferocity and courage. Satisfied I'm convinced he protected me from imminent danger, he stops barking and wanders back down the deck to eat, but bending down to the bowl hurts his elbows, so I set down my glass and hold the bowl up off the ground for him, braced against my knees, ignoring the pain in my lower back until he finishes the last morsel.

That's the least I could do for someone who just saved my life, isn't it?

Ah, sweet Max.

Aren't you through yet, Mom?

Just one more, Maxey, I promise. Now smile!

I love it. He just needed to earn his dinner by guarding you. 🙂
Benny does that sometimes… when he’d like to have a taste of what we’re eating. He’ll look out the back door and start barking at some imaginary danger. We’ll open the door to let him out. He’ll take off like a bat out of hell, barking his fool head off at absolutely nothing but his imagination. Then he’ll strut back inside and look at us expectantly, fully convinced that he’s just earned his treat. And he has. 🙂
They’re so alike, these sweet pooches of ours. Max is such a beauty. Thanks for sharing him with us.

Really love the post. Your Max and my (husband’s) Jasper would make quite the pair….elder dogs with stout hearts.

I’ve always been a cat person more than a dog person, but even I have to admit that there is little so noble as a good dog in his later years. God bless him!

Awww, what a sweet story. Max is so handsome. I can tell he is a faithful member of your family. Have you seen those stands that dog bowls fit in? They have them in different heights; it might help. 🙂

We actually looked into getting one of those stands a few years ago, or building one, but he always just sprawled out in front of his bowl. For some reason, he's not doing that as much now. I've tried putting it on the doorstep – just the right height, but he likes keeping an eye on things while he eats and he can't there. Thanks for reminding me about those stands!

All of the above, I'm sure! Probably some lions and tigers, too. But nothing I could see, of course. That's why I'm so grateful he's around to protect me!

I love cats AND dogs. Cats don't survive outside for very long here though, and I promised the allergy doctor no more inside cats. Do you think God would forgive me for lying to my allergy doctor? I truly miss having a cat. Except for the kitty litter thing, of course.

That made me laugh picturing Benny doing that – he's such a character! And I'm sure he's a fierce guard dog, too!!
