Pop passed away early Thursday afternoon.

Those words are so hard to type; I couldn't do it here before today.

Thank you for all of the prayers and light sent his way, and ours. We believe his passing, and the way he passed, was an answer to prayers, probably even his own… so peaceful, his sons and beloved wife of 60 years by his side, holding his hands, whispering their love, letting him go to the next life, painfree and joyful.

These fragile bodies of ours aren't meant to last forever – what more could we ask?

I have heard about the Angels of Hospice, but this was my first experience with the loving care, consideration and respect they pour upon patients and their families. If you ever doubt there is goodness in the world, spend a day in a hospice center and your faith will be restored. I believe every member of the staff of Covenant Hospice in West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, from the doctor to the woman who mopped the floors, is an angel.

Texas reunion

This week has been a blur, but moments of sweetness still swirled through the sorrow…

…..arriving in time to whisper your love and say goodbye to your dear father-in-law; listening to childhood stories of your husband and brothers that trigger a laugh from their dad; supporting your husband, his brothers, and your mother-in-law when their hearts are breaking; the loving care of hospice workers; calls and messages of love and prayers from friends and family; the fierce love of sons for their father and mother

Mom, pop, and first seven

Thank you again for your sweet messages and prayers, and please keep them coming as Mom, Tom, and his brothers adjust to life without Pop.

Rest in peace, Pop. I love you and I'm going to miss seeing that twinkle in your eye.

O my God, fill my soul with holy joy,
courage and strength to serve you.
Enkindle your love in me and then walk with me
along the next stretch of road before me.
I do not see very far ahead, but when I have arrived
where the horizon now closes down,
a new prospect will open before me,
and I shall meet it with peace. Amen.

Barbara, I was so sorry to see this posted on FB. I’ve offered up prayers for all of you since. It’s hard for me to comment on something so painful in such a public way; FB is a little too public for me which is why I don’t post there much. Please know that you and your family have been on my mind and in my prayers. I’m so glad Pop’s passing was peaceful. I dealt with the hospice people for my mother and I agree with your opinion of them 100%. They are angels on earth. May Mr. Shallue’s soul rest with God in eternity. God bless you all.

Barbara…I am so very sorry for your loss. I haven’t yet read the longer tribute you wrote, but just this notice–and the photos!–make your father-in-law very real to me. Thinking of you and of the rest of his family–all those sons!–how proud he must have been.

funny I just happen to be reclining in a brown chair similar to the one picture as I read about this great guy in your family. This chair is not my typical location for browsing the blogs. Thanks for sharing his memory with us. All the best to you and the whole family.

So sorry to hear this news. I think of you and Tom and the kids and how strange and beautiful it is for people to connect in this world, despite all the differences, in all the ways we do. Love and God bless.

There’s a Mary Oliver poem: In Blackwater Woods, that I like. I read it during the memorial service for my mother-in-law and I’ve sent it to friends in mourning. I found it online and thought you might like to have it:

I am so sorry with you loss. The words of this post is a wonderful tribute to what seemed to be a wonderful man. As you say “these fragile bodies of ours aren’t meant to last forever”, but I am sure his spirit will always be with those who loved him – and who he loved.

Thank you, Fiona. He passed away in August, but it's still hard to believe he's gone and I know Tom's feeling his loss today especially.
