Yellow-green,

wafting like a leaf in the wind to the top of a live oak,

Jan 2013-0009

disappearing but for your white breast,

Jan 2013-0010

and savoring,

as I do,

Jan 2013 crop-0009

the kiss of winter raindrops upon your face.

Who are you?

(If any of you knows what kind of bird this is, please share! I'm thinking perhaps a female or young golden-cheeked warbler…?)

I still stink at identifying birds, so I’m not even going to embarrass myself trying.
I will say I’ve never seen one like that, though. I really need to get out more!

I'll let you know if anyone else knows! I'm terrible at remembering birds anyway.

I think you’re right, Barb. Not a birder myself, but here is the description of the male and female from the Audubon Society website:
This small songbird measures about 5 inches long with a 7.75 inch wingspan and weighs .34 ounces. The male has a bright yellow face framed by a black bib, crown, nape, back and bill. A black eye stripe runs from the bill through the eye to the nape. The lower parts are white, with two thick and jagged black lines running along the sides. The upper wing is grey with two thick, white wing bars. The female looks similar, but her throat is white, her upperparts are grey, her eyestripe is thin, and her wingbars are smaller than the male’s.

My guess – it’s one of two that are mentioned in the “a-bird-in-hand-is-worth”.
    That phrase needs an update.
A bird in your picture is worth two you missed because you didn’t have your camera ready. Yeah I know I need to work on the phrase.

It does look like the American Goldfinch, non-breeding adult male. What a great catch, Barbara! He’s so purty and so brave out there in the rain. Bless his little heart.

    Proud Songsters
The thrushes sing as the sun is going,
And the finches whistle in ones and pairs,
And as it gets dark loud nightingales
    In bushes
Pipe, as they can when April wears,
As if all Time were theirs.
These are brand new birds of twelvemonths’ growing,
Which a year ago, or less than twain,
    No finches were, nor nightingales,
    Nor thrushes,
    But only particles of grain,
And earth and air and rain.

Thank you, Richard! Most people are saying it's a goldfinch, but I still think there's a chance it's a warbler.
