Peter-noone-picture-20493736

It was Peter Noone's voice I first fell in love with. My six-year-old heart broke for him when he sang to Mrs. Brown about her lovely daughter.

"Wait for me, Peter," I told the radio, "I'll never break your heart like that."

I still can't resist a British accent.

Imagine my excitement the next year when my aunt invited my sister and me to see his adorably-boyish face and tousled sandy-blonde hair in person! Herman's Hermits were coming to the Houston Coliseum!  It would be my very first concert.

My memory about the actual concert is pretty sketchy. I know I wore pink, all the way down to my Keds. My mother had taken me shopping for a special outfit. And it seems we sat pretty close to the stage, close enough to see Peter's precious face, but that might just be wishful thinking playing with my memory.

The Animals were the back up group. They became one of my favorite bands, too. Now that I think about it, I bet my attraction to bad boys can be traced to watching Eric Burdon sing "Little Red Riding Hood" up on that stage.

Young love is fickle, though.  Bobby Sherman, David Cassidy, Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Paul McCartney, Dennis Wilson, that kid on H.R. Pufnstuf (Jack Wild – British accent again!)…they all made my heart go pitter-patter.

But it was another adorably-boyish face topped with tousled sandy-blonde hair that finally caught my heart for good. He wasn't a celebrity and he didn't have a British accent, but he was born in England.

Close enough.

Thanks for the memory. Now the song will be playing in my mind. And the tonette; the first musical instrument.

Strange, this format is still so small. Yes, I did have a crush on Micky Dolenz of the Monkeys! I never really swooned over any British singers, but I did marry one!

I think he looks like him, too! I didn't realize it until I saw a photo of Peter now, with glasses. Whoa!

Cool that in your memory you were sitting close enough to the stage to see his face. What you remember is all that counts!

What a fun post — you and I grew up with the same celebrities in our lives. I was never a fan of Peter Noone or Jack Wild for whatever reason. I was (and still am) drawn to the more mysterious and reckless. Loved this Barb! xo

I rode in an elevator with the Herman’s Hermits in NYC. It was kinda wild.. I was young and knew them by voice but not faces. There was a crush of people around, girls…it was fun. And, like you that song with that delightful British accent!
All in all, you made the better choice!

Cute wedding pic! My big crush was David Cassidy, followed closely by Davy Jones and Donnie Osmond. In my teens it was Robert Plant all the way baby. Saw Zeppelin in concert in ’76 or ’77. When Stairway to Heaven was played I thought I’d pass out. LOL What a great blog meme!

Interesting your husband was born in the UK. Have you gone over there is visit his family?
Any special links needed to play the blog hop? I’ve done blog hop type things before but often they want you to include a link and/or icon type picture.

why do comments need to be so difficult? I just left one and then filled in the email etc. info. Clicked post and then nothing.
Anyway I thought it was interesting that your husband was from the UK and wondering if you have had the chance to visit his family over there.

What a great build up to a fun reveal…you married a British guy. I love period dramas. Maybe it’s in the blood. My ancestors (George Webb and Mary Ann Ward) immigrated from England in the 1860s. Thanks for the fun post about the charm of British singers / actors.

Bill, I’m so sorry about the comments. Typepad has a new spam blocker and it’s a little aggressive. I discovered tons of comments in my spam folder, including my replies to some that somehow snuck through!
Actually, my husband was born in the UK, but his dad was in the Air Force, so he doesn’t have any close family there. There are Shallue’s in Ireland we’d love to visit some day. Very, very distantly related. Thanks for being persistent in trying to comment!!

Well, my husband has a British birth certificate, but he’s technically American (and has an American one, too.) He’s an Air Force brat! I think most of my ancestry comes from England, too, but way back in the 1700’s or 1600’s.

This was so much fun to read.. as was glancing through the other choices in the images and through the other comments. Your crushes mirrored mine a fair bit (except maybe for the Partridge guy). Add to them Richard Chamberlain (yes, I know), David McCallum, Michael Landon and lol.. Sajid Kahn (if anyone remembers him).
There is indeed a resemblance between your hubby and the Hermit. 🙂

Oh, I fell in love with Richard Chamberlain, too, and even took vacation from work to watch Shogun! No, I don't remember Sajid, but I googled him and I can see why you would have a crush on him! I also had one on A. Martinez, who played bad-boy Cimarron in "The Cowboys". Sigh. My friend and I snuck back into the theater to watch it (him) a second time.
