I intended to post this last night. You know, "Five Things on Friday" – that catchy alliteration thing.

Instead, I went dancing.

So here are my "Five Things on Friday, on Saturday":

1. Did you watch the Grammies? I did this year for the first time in ages. So I was even more jealous that my kids got to see the grammy-winning band "Fun." in Austin two nights later! (Is it okay to be jealous of your kids?)

2. I was raised Baptist, but converted to Catholicism more than 15 years ago after about 15 years of contemplation about it. Pope Benedict XVI's decision to resign earlier this week came as a huge surprise. However, I respect him for stepping down if he feels he isn't physically able to do the job anymore.  It's unusual, as far as tradition goes, but I'm not worried about the Church and don't anticipate huge changes.

3. I received another "sorry, you aren't our choice for this job" email.  It was for an administrative assistant position that didn't pay much. I replied with my thanks for letting me know, and asked if they could tell me why I wasn't chosen, in case it was something I could change and increase my odds with the next application. I was told the "chosen one" has a bachelor's degree and more years of clerical, accounts payable, and customer service experience… which tells me they must be at least as old as I am, but they're still scrambling to find a job and are forced to resort to low-paying positions, despite years of experience and a bachelor's degree.  Which means I'm screwed in the job department, if that's my competition. (No, I'm not giving up. Just whining.)

4. THE WEDDING is coming up fast! I need to find a good mother-son song for the reception. Any suggestions?

5. I came across a fortune cookie fortune in my purse. I have no idea where it came from, but I love what it says: "In the providence of the mind, what one believes to be true either is true or becomes true." Do you agree or disagree?

I hope you've had a wonderful Saturday!

Go here (http://bridalmusings.com/2012/09/mother-son-wedding-dance-songs/) for some mother/son song suggestions.
Don’t be too discouraged about finding a job. Just keep applying and one day you’ll find the right one.
I agree with “In the providence of the mind, what one believes to be true either is true or becomes true.” It reminds me of the Anias Nin quote: “We don’t see the world as it is; we see it as we are.”
There’s research that says once we decide to believe something, not even proof of our mistake will convince us otherwise.

    Barbara,
I so enjoy reading your blog! I appreciate our common good friend Rae introducing it to me. I love the analogy and or the fortune cookie, messages come at the right time, don’t they? Truth is measured so many ways but manifesting the truth in our minds can be for our own good or maybe not. In any event, a “thinking mind” usually seeks truth and in the end finding it (the truth) is always very powerful. LOVE IT!
I noticed you live somewhere near Austin and see you are looking for employment. My company has a branch in Austin and would find joy passing your resume along (if you are comfortable). We are a 45 year old staffing company and may be able to assist. Feel free to send your resume to me at rethridge@meador.com and I will pass along for you.
Have a faith filled sunday doing what makes you, YOU!
    Renee

What a bummer about the job…crappy economy!
I found this webpage for mom-son weddings songs and after listening to a few, one in particular stood out. It just seemed so you and him…wish by rascal flats

Ok, good feedback on the job submission, but don’t let that stop you … there IS a position out there just for YOU, at the pay you want/deserve, an appreciative boss, and a nice environment. May I suggest you write your wish list, fold it up and put it someplace safe, so that when the dream comes true, you can pull and out and say, “See, I knew it was out there!” Not having a degree may be a stumbling block, but not insurmountable. Someone will appreciate the self-taught experience you bring to the table.
And I agree with Pauline, just keep looking and submitting. The players and opportunities are just not ready for you yet. For example, the job I have now … my boss was still in Virginia 3+ months ago, then she had to get settled, then she had to decide what she needed and was looking for … and I had to stumble upon the job posting at just the right time. It will happen for you too.
Continue doing what makes you feel competent and confident. Then you will be ready when you get to speak to someone face-to-face. Sending love and encouragement.

I’m so bummed … I wrote a long thoughtful, motivational post and it disappeared … poof! As you know, it’s hard to recapture what came so easily. Suffice it to say, I’m on your side and know you’ll find just the right position for you. Maybe not in your time, but in the right time. Make your wish list … what you really want in your next job … great boss, the right amount of money, and a super environment. Tuck it away for the moment you get what you’ve wished for; then you can say, “see, it was out there just for me.”

Thank you for the link! I've already opened it and will jump on there in just a second. And thanks for the encouragement on the job, too. I believe you're right, which is why I'm glad you agree with the fortune cookie. I do, too.

It does, but I won't give up. I know something will turn up eventually. In the meantime, I'm grateful for my part time jobs!

Thank you! I know something will turn up. In the meantime, my part times keep me busy every day, and give me variety. So maybe that's the best path for me, anyway!

You are quite the social butterfly! Sorry about the job. Yikes, glad I stopped looking. I know something will open up that’s just right for you. Hang in there and pray! You might not want to read my latest post venting about Catholicism. :/ I’m a cradle Catholic but I fear we’re permanently on the outs.

I'm not giving up on finding the job. I actually like the variety and flexibility of my part time jobs, but they're inconsistent and I'd love to not have to work weekends. Sigh. I'm off to read your Catholic post!! How could I resist after that?

I didn’t know about your conversion. You’re full of surprises. Your fifteen years of contemplation reminds me of Thomas Merton’s process before he went into the monastery.

Yes, I am a zealous Baptist turned cynical Agnostic turned slightly less cynical Catholic. I think that’s why I’m drawn to Thomas Merton’s story.
